Calculate baggage against the allowance on each ticket, then apply the airline’s actual charging method. Excess kilograms alone do not determine the fee: piece count, individual weight, dimensions and route rules can change the result. The 12 scenarios below are illustrative exercises, not passenger case studies or live airline quotes.
Start with these inputs
Write down the operating airline, route, travel date, fare name, included allowance and any purchased baggage. For each packed item, record its weight and outside dimensions. Keep checked baggage and cabin baggage in separate lists.
Under a weight allowance, excess weight = maximum of zero and (total accepted checked weight − included/purchased weight). This gives a weight difference, not a price. Under a piece allowance, assess each item’s weight and size and then count the pieces.
Twelve scenarios to work through
All limits and weights in this table are hypothetical ticket conditions used to teach the calculation.
| Scenario | Calculation or issue | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| 1. 35 kg packed; 30 kg included | 5 kg above the total | Request the applicable baggage purchase quote |
| 2. 28 kg packed; 30 kg included | No total excess | Still check each item’s size and weight |
| 3. Two 23 kg pieces allowed; bags weigh 25 and 21 kg | One piece is 2 kg over | Repack to 23 + 23 if contents and dimensions permit |
| 4. Two 23 kg pieces allowed; one 40 kg box | One item exceeds its limit | Split into accepted pieces; do not rely on 46 kg total |
| 5. One piece allowed; two 10 kg bags | Piece count is exceeded | Quote an extra piece or use one accepted bag |
| 6. No checked bag included; one 18 kg bag | An allowance must be purchased | Compare the add-on with another fare |
| 7. Outbound 30 kg; return 20 kg; bag 25 kg | Return is 5 kg over | Price the return independently |
| 8. International ticket 30 kg; separate domestic ticket 20 kg | Domestic flight is the constraint | Add its baggage cost before selecting the itinerary |
| 9. Two travellers with separate allowances | Pooling is not established | Ask whether their tickets permit combined assessment |
| 10. Box fits weight but exceeds dimensions | Weight calculation is insufficient | Obtain acceptance and an oversize quote, or repack |
| 11. Infant equipment plus family suitcases | Special-item treatment may differ | Confirm stroller and infant allowance separately |
| 12. Pilgrimage itinerary plus Zamzam | A special-item rule applies | Confirm permitted packaging, airport and onward carriage |
These exercises deliberately avoid a universal PHP-per-kg rate. Copying another traveller’s fee can misprice a different fare, country, direction or purchase channel.
Why separate tickets matter
PAL’s baggage conditions apply the allowance of each separate ticket. A domestic leg does not automatically inherit an international allowance. Emirates’ baggage policy also distinguishes weight and piece concepts. Read those distinctions before treating all carriers as per-kilogram systems.
Ask the seller to identify which flights are issued together, whether bags are checked through, and where collection or customs processing occurs. Save the answer with your itinerary. The number of seller confirmation emails is not a reliable test of baggage handling.
Turn the calculation into a buying decision
Request an itemised price for the exact extra weight or pieces, including any applicable size charge. Compare current fare plus required baggage against a fare that includes your needs. Verify the deadline and refund/change conditions for the baggage purchase itself.
Keep a copy of the receipt and reweigh after adding gifts. If the box is unacceptable or the baggage quote is too high, compare shipping versus check-in rather than expecting a counter waiver.
Common questions
Does OFW status change the calculation automatically?
No. Add a special benefit only when its terms apply and the carrier confirms it for your booking. The OFW allowance guide explains what evidence to request.
Can I multiply excess weight by a fee found online?
Only after confirming that exact rate and charging method apply to your ticket. A piece charge, weight band or size restriction can make a simple per-kilogram multiplication wrong.
